PAUL HANSON MEMORIAL

The 23rd Paul Hanson Memorial got under way with a total of 64 players in 16 teams. Dr. Bruce Tempest (Gallup representative in the McKinley School Board) and Karen White (McKinley Schools Superintendent) were on hand to hand the tournament prizes as well as three scholarships. As well, Ann Tom, who did a fantastic job in recruiting and signing players at the main office. This event has become very highly appreciated by sponsors and players (left, Tommy Pino after his "straight drive" on #18), as anyone can witness a direct impact on the lives of many young people.
For those new to Gallup, Mr. Hanson's caring tenure as Gallup's School Superintendent, was cut short one day in the early '80's by an angry person and that day remains one of the most horrible tragedies of our town of all time. However, Mr. Hanson's work, vision and influence in students and staff was not in vain. Several people saw to start something bearing his name in memoir. Thus, the Paul Hanson Memorial Benefit Scramble was born and since, has given scholarships to many students. The tournament's original director, Ed Ping, now retired and living in Arizona, instituted several little details, all of which remain in place for this tournament (if you read this Ed, the Sheer System is still used and we still have all those little prizes for closest to pin, long drive, etc, for different age and gender categories as well as "The Skin Game"!), all of which make it a unique type of event. Even though many of those people of that generation have moved away and even though the Hanson family moved back to Oklahoma (though members of the Hanson family have come from time to time), the event still draws enough people to make it one of the most liked and appreciated events of our golf course... And no, it is never played in "eightsomes" ("gangsomes").
Oh yeah, now you are thinking, "is he going to give us the results?"... You bet! I just wanted all of you to know what the name behind this tournament was all about, and if you knew, just to remind you, here are the results:
