PLAYING IN 50 STATES

Doug and Shirl Keith, from Cary, NC (a driver and a wedge from the famed Pinehurst courses), could have chosen any golf course in New Mexico to add to their repertoire of courses in different states, yet, they chose Fox Run in Gallup as their first course ever played in the state of New Mexico.

Recently retired from IBM, the couple has a goal of playing golf in all 50 states and when their southwest swing, which will go as far as California is over, they will have already played in 19 states... sure, it is a long way to go to all 50, but their goal is to do it by the end of the year. Actually, the toughest part is already done: they have played in Hawaii already, including The Plantation Course, which is where they play the Mercedez Championships (former Tournament of Champions); they have also played Pinehurst (where Payne Stewart won the U.S. Open in 1999), Kingsmill (VA, a place where Davis Love III has won 4 times in the PGA Tour) and have played in Scotland (Tunberry, New Course in St. Andrews & Prestwick, among others), Spain (including Valderrama, host of the 1997 Ryder Cup and other European PGA tournaments) and Ireland.

Both are pretty decent golfers, Doug scored a 75 and Shirl an 82... not record rounds by any means, but very decent scores... however, their round of less than three hours would be one that many people would "kill for"... "Yes, we do play pretty fast", said Mrs. Keith.

So, while all of our locals were trying to get their first or one of their first rounds of the season, as we have been open for less than a week, the Keiths have already played quite a lot of golf this season and Gallup was only one of their stops.
As far as our locals, Mike & Anthony Silva and Calvin Begay, the people with the most rounds in Gallup the last two years, have already started their golf season in full force. The Silvas playing already 4 times in 5 days. Calvin, had it not been because he was sent to Utah, would be right there also. The weather was excellent on Good Friday, and we had a pretty busy day... and hopefully, winter is truly over!! Come and visit us!
