The 24th (pictured here are "Bogey Men", Alan Lewis, Bob Lewis, Scott Hamilton & Bill Lewis. The Lewis family has been putting up a team for 24 straight years!) edition of the Paul Hanson Memorial went down with the lowest field ever, but with the same success as before. The result is that although the field was of only 48, the prizes for the golfers were not proportionally reduced, and more importantly, there were scholarships to give, which Dr. Bruce Tempest graciously presented. It has been 25 years since the tragedy in which Mr. Hanson was gunned down in his office, so there are many people who have moved out of town, including the tournament's original chairman, Ed Ping and Paul Hanson's family, so there might not be as much "local interest" in the tournament as there once was.
However, as long as there is someone in Gallup McKinley Schools who continues carrying the torch, whether it is Mr. Robert Gintowt, current Athletic Director of Gallup McKinley Schools, or old friends like John Samford, this tournament will continue being one of the quiet events that has a palpable impact in our children and the community's future...
Forty eight or two hundred is not an issue, the tournament's name is not an issue, the important issue in the it is the continuous support of our children's education and future. Let's get to the results:
GROSS: 1st (59) Alan Lewis, Bill Lewis, Bob Lewis, Scott Hamilton; 2nd: (59) Bennett Johnson, Calvin Begay, Marcus Tulley, Mike Thompson
NET: 1st: (57.2) Brad Hoover, John T. Cresto, Rick Saucedo Jr., Ron Saucedo; 2nd:(57.2) Dave Martinez, Royt Nichols, Mike Nichols, Dave Martinez
LADIES: 1st: (59.3) Betty Armstrong, Robbie Menapace, Mary Batson, Shirley Wilson
Note: Gross and Net Scores are correct, as in both, there was a tie. The results are after the tie-breaker was applied.
A special thanks to Jennifer Stanley, Mr. Gintowt's secretary who worked as hard as anyone else towards the success of this event.
