AND THE WINNER IS.....!!!!
RENAMING THE GOLF COURSE:
On Tuesday, February 27, City Council selected "Fox Run G.C." as the new name of our golf course. Now, we will be in search for a new logo as well. As you were informed last time, there were two finalists which were submitted to City Council for their final decision. Congratulations to Micah Clark who submitted the winning name. Micah is the daughter of Sonny Clark, our avid golfer and friend.
TIGER STREAK ENDS:
Since we are not open yet and no one has submitted any information about any of our local golfers, let's talk a little about the PGA Tour and Tiger.
Match Play is the most unpredictable and the toughest form of playing golf, and more so at a professional level. Tiger's loss proves that. Nick O'Hearn, who had beaten Tiger before, has not won 10% of the titles that Tiger has, has never won a tournament in the PGA Tour, and beat the best player in the world. Match Play is a series of one day tournaments. Anyone can have a good day here and there, if you have it at the right time, you win a match and advance, even at the expense of a better player. That is what makes Match Play exciting: everyone is gunning for the best players in the world.
If you saw the match, you can appreciate how much Tiger wanted to win and how much he fought, not only against O'Hearn, but against his own swing which was not working on all "eight cylinders". He came back from 4 down to tie the match, even and did not play the par 5's very well. At any rate, his streak is one of the most remarkable streaks of all time and the best of modern golf, particularly since Arnold Palmer "put golf on the map" in the 60's.
Since Byron Nelson's streak of 11 in a row and 18 in one year (1945), no one had won 6 in a row until Tiger did in 2000, this time he won 7 consecutive starts (one of them was in 2007 but he ended with 6 in a row in 2006). Jack Nickalus, Gary Player, Johnny Miller, Tom Watson all won three consecutive starts in a row. That should put things in perspective!
Tiger is the only player ever to have held all four majors in a row, and though not in the same calendar year, it was within a 12 month span and nonetheless, he was the first professional to have all four together (he won the US Open, British Open & PGA Championship in 2000 and begun 2001 with The Masters).
In the final match between Henrik Stenson and defending champion Geoff Ogilvy, the old saying of, "There are two things that don't last, dogs chasing cars and pros putting for pars" came true. Ogilvy did not hit many greens coming in and had to keep saving par, while Stenson kept hitting greens and putting for birdie. Both will be pretty tough in 2007.
Now, lets wait for the first major of the year (only 5 1/2 weeks away): The Masters.
QUOTE OF THE MONTH:
"I did my thesis on the choke factor" (Johnny Miller, who won 25 times in the PGA Tour including the 1973 U.S. Open and the 1976 British Open) about what qualifies him to talk so bluntly about players losing their cool down the stretch.
See you around!
