Once, after he retired from competitive play, on the eve of the last round of the United States Open, Ben Hogan was asked, "Mr. Hogan, who do you think is going to win today?", never one to make meaningless comments, he answered, "I don't know. That's why they are playing". Wise words, very wise. He was the antitheses of those who think "there aren't any stupid questions, only stupid people", he knew the existence of both.
Indeed, if "experts" had been in charge of who won the Masters last Sunday, Tiger Woods would have won his 5th green jacket... and barring Woods' participation, before anyone else thought about Zach Johnson, there would have been several others who would have been "deserving" of the green jacket... including Padraig Harrington, Stewart Appleby, Retieff Goosen, Vijay Singh and Phil Mickelson among others. So, congratulations Zach!! You truly played like a champion when it counted. Furthermore, you made Mr. Hogan look smart... once more!
In our "Masters of Gallup & Augusta" tournament, players were asked to select three players from the top 24 in the leader board of The Masters. Each player, according to their position and/or world ranking, had a value from 0 (zero) to 18. The trick was that you had to choose players so that their total value added to at least 27. Their Sunday scores were added to the net score of the player for the team competition.
Mike Thompson won first place (pictured with Marcus Tulley in the background), both individual (70) and team wise (288). His teammates were:Zach Johnson (69), Jim Furyk (74) and Vaughn Taylor (75).
Other top individual scores, all at 71 were: Earl Barnhill, Leonard Nelson, Brian Rohrer and Mike Silva. David Bischoff came in at 72.
In the team category, in second place (289) were two teams: Bruce Jones (75), Jerry Kelly (70), Retieff Goosen (69) & Vaughn Taylor (75); and Mitch Murphy (74), Retieff Goosen (69), Zach Johnson (69) and Lee Westwood (77). At 290, just one shot behind at 290 were two other teams: Brian Rohrer (71), Retieff Goosen (69), Mark Calcavecchia (73) & Phil Mickelson (77); and David Bischoff (72), Tiger Woods (72), Luke Donald (73) & Mark Calcavecchia (73).
