With 72 players in 18 teams, the Cheerleaders tournament was financial and attendance success. (Left: Terry Jones, Jed Jones, Nick Robinson, Bobby John & Emmett Francis). Several players who played the previous day in the Ceremonial Scramble, decided to play this tournament as well. The difference was that on Saturday, it was a "blind draw", on Sunday, you could make your own team... and there were some really strong teams!
The results are as follow: 1st Scott Hamilton, Frank Gonzales, Dale Lovato & Randy radcliff; 2nd John Hartog, Marqui Armstrong, Scott Armstrong & Scotty Armstrong; 3rd Randy Slaughter, Jackie McKinney, David Haynes & Kerri Allgood (most likely their "A" player!); 4th Jonathan Avery, Macdonald Avery, Martin Avery & Daryll Dodson; 5th Dave Hill, Norman Nomoto, Dave Martinez & Tony Sanchez; 6th David & Gigi Bischoff paired with Tim & Jean Kline.

ReplyDeletei thought the city hired a maintence superentend not a maintence man like the old saying goes over paid under worked when the job is not geting done you get
behind the shovel not in front of it!!!!!
Everyone in 2005 was right: we could have roughs like Grants. We actually do.... in our fairways!

YOU WOULD THINK, WITH ALL THE EQUIPMENT THIS CITY HAS. THE GOLF COURSE COULD BORROW THE MOWERS FROM PARKS & RECREATION OR WEED BURNERS FROM STREETS TO TAKE CARE OF THESE WEEDS. WHO THE HELL IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS CRAP? DO WE NEED TO FIRE THEM AND FIND SOMEONE WHO CARES?
ReplyDeleteWhat do you call our fees? "Green Fees" or "Weed Fees"? How come the city always makes everyone cut the weeds on their homes, but not cut them on the golf course?
ReplyDeleteRay Ramirez & Robert Rosales
If you had a gardener for you back yard, what would be his main job? Grow weeds?
ReplyDeleteYou neighbor!
We must hope that the members of the "Golf Committee" can somehow see their way clear to address the real problems at the golf course. Perhaps the City Manager should "manage" to clarify the matter of who is in charge so that complaints & cures could be aimed at someone who can #1 take resposibility and #2 have the authority to approve funds and initiate action. Do Bob Weekes, Alex Alvarez, Gerald Herrera, Bill Nechero and Harry Mendoza truely understand who's golf course it really is????? Do we dare ask them to co-operate with each other in order to bring about change for the better that we can actually see?? Is simple maintenece (mowing the grass and cutting the weeds) too much to ask????? Why do we have a "Golf Committee"? Who puts their recommendations into action?? Is a "Golf Committee" really necessary when all we must do is ask our Mayor, City Managers and Employees to do their jobs??? And last but not least - Who is in Charge??????
ReplyDeleteHERE, HERE TO THE PREVIOUS
ReplyDeletePLEASE FOWARD THIS TO BOB WEEKES.
I PLAYED IN GRANTS YESTERDAY, A NEW MEXICO SENIOR'S TOURNAMENT. IT WAS A PLEASING EXPERIENCE. IT WAS A PLEASURE TO HIT A SHOT OUT OF A TIGHT FAIRWAY LIE AND WATCH THE BALL CHECK UP ON THE GREEN. NO-ONE LOST A BALL AND WE SPENT VIRTUALLY NO TIME LOOKING FOR THEM. I WAS REMINDED, HHOWEVER, THAT SEVERAL PEOPLE IN GALLUP WISH WE HAD ROUGHS LIKE GRANTS. I ASSUME THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT THE THIRD CUT OR THE DEEP ROUGHS, SOME OF WHICH IS 8 TO 12" DEEP. ALL THESE PEOPLE SEEM TO LEAVE OUT ONE IMPORTANT FACT. IF YOU PACE OFF THE FAIRWAYS AND THE FIRST & SECOND CUTS OF ROUGH IN GRANTS YOU WILL FIND THAT THEY ARE 100 TO 150 YARDS WIDE. YES - ABSOLUTELY, LET'S HAVE ROUGHS LIKE GRANTS!!!! HOWEVER, THAT WOULD REQUIRE KILLING A FEW ACRES OF OUR WEEDS !!
OBSERVANTLY YOURS,
GARY LELOFF
I am the current instructor of the University of New Mexico-Gallup's beginning golf class and I wish to comment on the remarks made by Alex in his column that was published in the Independent on August 18, 2007.
ReplyDeleteIn his remarks, Alex implies that safety and the "Spirit of the Game" are not taught in the beginning golf class. This is not true! Safety and the "Spirit of the Game" are taught as specific topics and these values are integrated through the course. This is true now and has been true since the class was first presented several years ago.
I know this because I was a student in this class in 2003, also while preparing to instruct Beginning Golf in 2006, I reviewed the course syllabi of all past instructors.
I was not present at the Cheerleaders' Tournament and therefore cannot comment on the incident, however I can assure Gallup golfers that golf values and etiquette have not been neglected by UNM-Gallup instructors of golf.
Sincerely,
John Lewis Taylor
John:
ReplyDeleteNowhere in the column did I imply that safety and the spirit of the game are not taught in these beginning courses. What I did imply is that given the fact that the group had people with this kind of knowledge, that someone should have said, "No, lets not hit over the hill until we know if it is safe". Later, I found out that there was only one of them present when the shots were hit and in my opinion, he should have spoken up (this was corrected in my column of Aug 25).
Had this person had spoken before the shots, there would have been no need for the thoughts in my column. Had this person been ignored and blind shots hit anyway and still have an accident, then I would have written, "even though players were warned by a golf teacher not to do so, they ignored safety and caused an accident".
I have great respect for all teachers, and I appreciate all that some of you all do to further a game that we all love. The comment was intended to make a point that if you have certain knowledge, don't keep it to yourself, use it as well.
Hopefully my thoughts have now been more clear to you.
Thanks
