With the United States Open played this weekend and two local tournaments, it was difficult to choose on to report on for our local golfers. So before I report on this, I'll say that tomorrow, I will be pulling for Rocco. Tiger will and has won his share of majors, but Rocco would be a worthy champion, he truly represents what golf is all about. There have been many underdogs in the 18 hole playoff format of the national championship that have won, Jack Fleck (1955, beating Ben Hogan), 1966 Bill Casper beating Arnold Palmer, 1971 Lee Trevino beating Jack Nicklaus quickly come to mind. So, win or lose, it will be fun to watch. Do n
ot expect for Rocco to roll over! Now, lets talk about our locals:
The 2008 Father-Son/Daughter tournament had a light field of 16 players, however the fund and camaraderie was not absent. Jackie McKinney and son Brian won, hands down, the 2008 Father-Son/Daughter Tournament, their net score of 55 won by 5 shots over Marcus Tulley and his daughter/son team of Tisha and Marcus Jr. (Marcus called and said, "Look, I've got to play with both, they'll alternate holes as my partner, or I can't play", he obviously made a good choice... both as a player and better yet, as a parent!) , Paul Chavez and Mike Silva were next with a 61. Ronnie Pinto and partner Willie Ross tied for 1st in the"Father-Father" flight with Willie Holtsoi and Leroy Thomas. Angela Garcia and dad Joe, made a 1st ever appearance at the event, and hopefully won't be the last one. Angela, a former GHS girls team member, now lives in Albuquerque and does not get to play much, bus admitted that she'd like to make time for more golf... like Nike commercial says... "just do it".
We had a "Father-Father" flight that was won by Ronnie Pinto and Willie Ross, with a score of 62. It was nice to see the team of Joe and Angela Garcia; Angela, a former GHS girls team member, came from Rio Rancho just to play the tournament with dad. Congratulations to all! In the Elks Tournament, Josh Miles made it two in a row and led his team of Shannon Tanner and Don Marzilli to a win by a mere 1/10th of a stroke (63.25 to 63.35) over Paul Acosta, Frank Barela and Bernie Dominguez. Next came Bid Knight, Mike Joe and Ed Clah (63.50) and Dennis Peterson, Gordon Gorman & Andy Piano (64.20). The tournament drew 48 players.
