AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY "COMBO" TOURNAMENT DRAWS FULL FIELD

According to Dale Dedrick, Lucille Martinelli and Bill Armstrong, the brains behind this event, the first ever "combo" event in Gallup, and probably anywhere -nine holes during daylight and nine holes after dark-, was a success. I'll say this, it was fun for all, but I am glad (and surely everyone else will join me) that we don't have to run one of these every week, as we finished at 1:30 a.m.!! ("thank you" to all staff and volunteers who stayed until the end!!).

Sixty six players, many playing with families and extended families (above left, sisters Robbie Menapace and Betty Armstrong flanking Betty's son Jason), and, golf enthusiasts made the field of this event that replaced the "Joe Sherman Longest Day of Golf" (maybe we should now call it the "Lucille, Dale & Bill Armstrong Longest Night of Golf"!!).
Several of the participants had played in the dark before (for Marty Menapace and Olsen Arviso, right and far right, it had been a while since they played at night) and for many, it was their first experience. The tournament recognized the top five teams (low gross and the top four net scores), the results are as follow:

1st Gross (61): Bud Knight, Scott Knight & Brent Bischoff; 1st Net (58.5): Ernie Abeita, Marco Abeita & Paul Saucedo; 2nd Net (58.5): Victor Landavazo, Rafael Rodriguez & Brian Maldonado; 3rd Net (59.0): Dave Hill, Norman Nomoto & Dale Lovato; Two teams "just out of the money" (59.0): Jim Hallock, Tom Mascarenas & Richard Schmitt; Tommy Haws, Thomas Lee & Jimmy Munozcano.
A special thanks to all sponsors, but specially to all the playing sponsors who supported this event.

  1. Congratulations! You finally found someone favorable at the paper who does not write only negatives, even if he looks stupid and does not know what he is talking about!

I was there on "Grand Opening" day, what a flop! The course was in the most terrible shape I've ever seen it, but thanks, the hamburguer helped my mood at the turn.

But, miracles do happen, even if sometimes it takes 6 months at 13 hours a day. We should now be happy that our competenet superintendent found out what that water in the ponds is rally for!! Amazing!

The ariation will help too. Good idea!!

    Way to go Mr. Weekes!

    I'm back,

    Michael Swango

P.S. By the way, if everything Mr. Weekes is quoted as saying is true, my deduction is that we can only play a nice course 2 months out of the year (if we are lucky). God only knows what kind of Holy Water we used before he came to shorten our season from 9 months to 2! What a savior!

  2. Only Kevin Kulogh and our blind city representatives downtown believe Bob Weeks. Not even Alex has the balls to speak up, what a sorry, sad shame!

Shame on you Independent! Shame on you Bob Weeks, shame on you Alex. Shame on you city hall. Shame on you Kevin. You all think the public is stupid! There is no excuse big enough!
