Several new faces made the top of the
leader board in our local
Golf City Championships:
Michael Thompson (left, following his putt on #9), not a new golfer, but a new face among our
local's best, bested
Jason Armstrong by one

stroke to win the 2008 City Championship. As well, he beat several former champions, including
Jason,
Bruce Jones and
Jonathan Avery.
Mel Rousseau (below right reading a strange break on #7), another
savvy golfer, but a new face among in our championships, won the
Senior Championship by one over
Calvin Begay, who had his best ever nine with a 38, though he could not kee up his early round pace.
Ronnie Pinto (below left) came in 1st net among the seniors.
The tournament drew 22 players, 12 of them seniors, so both flights were hotly contested. in a cold morning, after an afternoon's rain that made the course heavy and difficult, Michael opened with a 76 and a 6 stroke lead over his nearest competitor, at the time, Bruce Jones, former champion and the only triple

winner ever (2006 he won the City Championship, the
MGA Championship and the Senior Championship). Jason was one stroke farther back.
Things got a little difficult in the last nine homes for Michael, but nevertheless, he still had a three stroke lead going into the last hole... that is when things got a little tense. Playing #9 from across the water, Mike hit his tee shot short and left, into a bush on the side of the hill, and still in a blind from the green, Jason followed with a nervous tee shot that barely cleared the hazard but got

caught between the weeds and brush on the side of the lake, forcing him to take an unplayable lie. After the next few shots, Mike ended with a triple bogey 7 and Jason salvaged a bogey, leaving him one shot short. Mike's last hole may now allow him to subscribe to the theory that "I rather win ugly than lose pretty".
Note: two great
comebacks after the first 18 holes,
Kenny Bean shot 37 after a start in the 90's and
Joseph Johnston who scored a 35 after an opening 89.
Congratulations to all!
