The 2009 season has officially started, and it did with almost twice as many players as it did last season in this same event. This year we had 36, last year we had 22. This year the temperature was just above 40 and windy (check out Jason Gonzales' golf outfit on left!), last year it was nice and calm... shirt-sleeve day. So, while Tiger was playing his way to another win and another $1,000,000 first place check, 36 brave ones in Gallup were fighting the weather for a little glory of their own. Congratulations to all!!
No point in inviting teams to play a nine hole "shootout" after the main event as we had planned, 18 holes was enough! The format scored over 24 holes (6 holes were 'Best Ball", 6 holes were "scramble" and 6 holes were "Aggregate" - both players' scores counting) and tournament ended up with two flights, with the following results:
First Flight:
1st (89.8) Tom Chee & Ray Moore;
2nd (92.4) Olsen Arviso & Clarence Peterson;
3rd (97.8) Mike Thompson & Ray Tsinajinnie;
4th (99.8) Bruce Jones & Danny Radcliff.
Second Flight:
1st (86.9) Willie Holtsoi & Jason Gonzales;
2nd (95.8) Phil Allen (pictured right, while pitching from behind #5) & Simon Paredes;
3rd (98.6) Calvin Begay & Byron Montross;
4th (99.5) David Bischoff & Larry Sinnott.
By the way, I am praying for bad, cold weather in all events... players were so cold that they played the fastest tournament on record in the last few years: 4 hours!
