II "OLD TIMERS" EVENT IS BECOMING A FAVORITE

The second "Old Timers" event is quickly becoming a favorite of locals, young and old... I guess we all either have "old timers" in our lives or are one to start with! (I'm becoming one!) so it is not hard to find someone who will support the event. This year, even though we had a very slow week before the event due to weather conditions, and not many people showed up at the golf course, the event ended up with 76 players, second in attendance this year.
Dr. Lawrence Andrade & Neighbor-Teacher Scott Maclaren did a heck of a job organizing and promoting the tournament that was played in a scramble format. This year, in addition to the usual closest to pin and other contests that tournaments of this nature feature, Dr. Andrade came up with a new game: he picked 5 holes, if you made par, you got 1 point, 2 points for birdie and 3 for eagle, each point gave you a poker playing card, the team with the best hand won dinner for 8 at Frateli's, the new Italian restaurant on the north side. The dinners went to Paul Dimas, Paul Acosta, Don Marzilli & Armando Alvarez, who ended up with a full house, aces over kings. But, that was not the best of the day, and neither was the score of 55 shot by Tom Chee's team, the highlight of the tournament was a HOLE IN ONE BY ERNIE ABEITA who aced hole #5 with a 6 wood!
The bad part for Ernie was that this was one of the "circle" holes where you bet to get in the circle and you get odds the closer you get. It so happens that both judges were on the green when he hit it in the hole, so, he did not have a chance to bet and all he got was a "congratulations" by the judges, one of whom was councilor John J. Azua. The winners were as follows:
GROSS: 1st (55): Tom Chee, Travis Chee, Kevin Chee & Danielle Chee; 2nd (56) Paul Acosta, Paul Dimas, Don Marzilli & Armando Alvarez; 3rd (58) Tommy Pino, Calvin Begay, Bennet Johnson & Andrew Dominguez; 4th (58) David Haynes, Scott Hamilton, Gary Leloff & Johnny Hamilton; 5th (59) Ernie Abeita, Marco Abeita, Porky Abeita & Kenny Abeita.
NET: 1st (54.0) Jimmy Thomas, Chris Hicks, Nick Begay & Jonathan Avery; 2nd (54.0) Dan Halsey, Annie Gorman, Jaime Herrera & Paul Winkler; 3rd (55.0) Francis Redhouse, Roscoe Smith, Emmett Francis & A.J. Jefferson; 4th (55.0) Darryl Holtsoi, Jeff Holtsoi, Willie Holtsoi, Ray Holtsoi & Leroy Thomas and 5th (55.0) George Arviso, Kenny Matsutani, Bruce Belone & Ronnie Pinto.
