HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL....

I know, wishing Merry Christmas is rather late, but, everyone at the golf course still hopes that you all had a fantastic Christmas and we wish everyone a prosperous New Year. I was working on this one before Christmas (that is why the posting date shows December 20 instead of the 27th, which is actually when I posted it), but, for one reason or another, I kept "stalling". My apologies!
Our year is about to end..., but the golf season ended two weeks ago, at least one week earlier than what Bob Weekes had planned for our golfers, due to cold weather and snow. The golf course was kept open as long as we could.... Officially, we had planned for December 16 to be our last day of the season. And believe me, Bob will try to open as early as it is possible, but always considering the conditions and how the temperatures will affect us in the spring.
We are all very encouraged by the general response of our golfers in 2007. Our year ended in a positive note: we ended up with a little more than 1000 rounds better than last year, the return of three tournaments to our calendar (AC Houston, Special Olympics PGA Pro-Am and the Navajo Fair Scramble). As well, most fund-raisers did not suffer in participation, which is a sign that Gallup continues to be a "giving community" regardless of the circumstances, and the main reason of why many of us love and respect this community. Of all of these, the PGA Special Olympics Pro-Am was very special, as we all remembered Sharon Mraz, the driving force behind this tournament.
Jonathan Avery (pictured) won his 5th City and MGA Championship, but Gigi Bischoff was not able to defend hers as the WGA cancelled their championship... there is always next year! (Gigi has 6 championships so far). Bruce Jones, our first "triple champion ever" (in 2006 he won the City Championship, the MGA and Senior) successfully defended his Senior Championship, so, he did not go home empty-handed.
Three golfers played ove 150 rounds: Mike Silva, Anthony Silva and Calvin Begay. Congratulations.... and THANK YOU!
As far as golf course conditions, at the end of the year, we all saw signs of recovery in all areas and I am confident that I can wish everyone a better golfing year in 2008. Bob Weekes is constantly working on his 4-5 year recovery plan, as needs and city commitment allow him to do so. I know most everyone was particularly happy with the conditions of the greens, so, give the whole course some time... it will recover.
SO HERE WE ARE NOW... LET'S HAVE A WONDERFUL HAPPY NEW YEAR AND EXPECT TO PLAY MORE!!
