NAVAJO FAIR TOURNAMENT

The NAVAJO FAIR GOLF CLASSIC ended up with the participation of 72 players in 18 teams (left, the winning team: Marcus, Stan, Nick & Henry). This year though, the format was much different than in the past as all teams were subdivided into two separate 2-Man sub-teams, thus, every team, had two scores to count. The addition of these two scores made up for the total score of the team.

Eugene & Nancy Badonie, co-chairs of the tournament, after playing a similar tournament in Page, AZ, brought this unique format to Gallup. Though the starting set-up might need a little “tweeking” to allow for last minute “no-shows” (starting was delayed over an hour to re-organize the teams and groupings), the overall format was well received by the players, as play, which was in foursomes, was much faster than other scrambles that pair two teams together and took a little over 4 hours.

The winning team, with a score of 117.5 was formed by Marcus Tulley, Stan Overturf, Nick White & Henry Wagner, with the team of Nick White & Henry Wagner having shot an outstanding gross score of 62! Other results are as follows: 2nd (123.4) Arkie Huskie, Jeremy Huskie, Pat Waneeka & Elmer Roanhorse; 3rd (124.9) Gabriel Burke, Gilbert Ben, Cordero Ben & Elliot Becenti; 4th (125.4) Jerry Nex Jr., Leroy Thomas, Willie Ross & Anthony Trujillo; Tied for 5th (126.4) Ferlin Clark, Dennis Price, Clifford John & King Mike Jr. with George Arviso, Calvin Begay, Gigi Bischoff & Ray Moore.

With the hard work by the Badonies in getting additional sponsors for the event, in addition to the usual prizes for the top teams, there were eighteen (18) additional prizes for smaller contests (long putt, long drive, closest to the pin, etc) in each of the 18 holes, there, our six time ladies City Champion, Gigi Bischoff “cleaned up” with four of them!!

A special “thank-you” to the Badonies, who come all the way from Kayenta, AZ, for their hard and enthusiastic work to make this very unique tournament a success…. and, of course, congratulations to all the winners!

  1. The format was good, but in Gallup, there is no way you can start a tournement on time, let alonn one like that. Scrap it! Too much work and 2 much time.

  2. Did anyone read the editorial by Katthy Schmidtt? She was eloquent and pretty much on the mark...Way to go!

  3. They send surveys and don't want our signature, why would they want it here? I'll sign my name when they ask me my opinion in a serious manner and do something about what I think. In the meantime, I'll complain all I want until City Hall realizes that maintenance is making a mockery of what a golf course should look like. Come on! Mow those fairways and keep your watering for the night hours! Does anyone in the maintenance crew know what they are doing? You are killing whatever little the last administration left to us!

P.S. Get rid of the weeds... like they said in an editorial: you can mow them, but they are still there.

  5. We just heard through the "great vine" that Bob Weeks says that our greens are better than both courses in Farmington.

Did he play them? Has he ever been in any of the courses surrounding us, or who is the "expert's" who came with that stupidity?

Look, our greens are better than last year, no question, but we did not have ANY greens last year! It's hard not to improve with so much moisture, but better than Farmington?... That's a true stretch!!

  6. I READ KATHY SCHMIDTT'S LETTER TO THE EDITOR. i DON'T KNOW HER, BUT I WOULD LIKE TO MEET HER. I THINK SHE WAS RIGHT ON. SHE WAS ALSO PRETTY GENTLE WITH OUR SUPERINTENDENT AND CITY FATHERS. I STILL WONDER IF ANYONE UP THERE(CITY HALL)IS LISTENING.

IT IS NOW CLOSE TO GOLF COURSE CLOSING TIME (NOVEMBER). I'M SURE WE WILL WITNESS MANY IMPROVEMENTS BY NEXT SPRING. BUT, IF WE HAVE THE TIME, PERHAPS WE COULD LOAD UP THE MAYOR AND THE CITY MANAGER AND TAKE THEM ON A TOUR OF GOLF COURSES IN NEW MEXICO AND SPEAK WITH OTHER COURSE SUPERINTENDENTS AND GOLF PROS SO THEY WOULD UNDERSTAND HOW A GOLF COURSE IS RUN AND BE BETTER ABLE TO RECOGNIZE WHEN THE WOOL IS BEING PULLED OVER THEIR EYES. OVERSEEING THE MANAGEMENT OF ANY BUSINESS, ESPECIALLY A GOLF COURSE, WITHOUT ANY BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE IS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT IF NOT IMPOSSIBLE. SO INSTEAD OF LISTENING TO PEOPLE WHO'S JOB IT IS TO KNOW, WE FORM COMMITTEES IN THE HOPES OF FINDING AN EASY SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM OF LACK OF KNOWLEDGE IN THE AREA. I DON'T KNOW THAT ANYONE ON THE "GOLF" COMMITTEE HAS ANY EXPERIENCE IN GOLF COURSE MANAGEMENT. HOWEVER WELL INTENDED, I'M JUST NOT SURE THEY CAN ACCOMPLISH ANYTHING.

A FREIND OF MINE MENTIONED LIQUOR ON THE GOLF COURSE AS A MEANS OF RAISING THE NUMBER OF ROUNDS PLAYED. I THINK EVERYONE SHOULD BE ABLE TO ENJOY A REFRESHING COLD BEER DURING OR AFTER PLAY. I ALSO THINK LIQUOR MAY RAISE REVENUE IN AND OF ITSELF. BUT I DO NOT THINK LIQUOR HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH PEOPLE PLAYING OR NOT PLAYING THIS GOLF COURSE. IMPROVED CONDITIONS AND PROPER MAINTENENCE OF THE COURSE ARE THE ONLY REASONS GOLFERS WILL PLAY MORE OFTEN. EVERY GOLFER, AT WHATEVER LEVEL, PLAYS FOR THE PURE ENJOYMENT OF THE GAME AND THE FELLOWSHIP. ALSO THE BEAUTIFUL PEACEFUL SURROUNDINGS OF A GOLF COURSE ARE REMARKABLY RELAXING. THAT'S WHY WE PLAY. NOT FOR A PLACE TO DRINK!!

AS I SEE IT A GOLF COURSE IS A BUSINESS AND EVERY BUSINESS MUST TRY TO OFFER IT'S PROSPECTIVE CUSTOMERS AN EXCEPTIONAL PRODUCT AND AN EXCEPTIONAL PURCHASE EXPERIENCE. NOT ONLY ON THE CUSTOMER'S FIRST VISIT, BUT CONSISTANTLY EVERY TIME HE OR SHE VISITS. THAT'S HOW YOU INCREASE BUSINESS. OUR GOLF COURSE IS NOT A EXCEPTIONAL PRODUCT AND AS A MATTER OF FACT IT IS NOT EVEN AN ACCEPTABLE PRODUCT. THINKING OF IT AS A BUSINESS WITH IT'S ONLY COMPETITION 60 MILES AWAY, OUR GOLF COURSE MUST REALLY BE BAD IF CUSTOMERS ARE WILLING TO DRIVE THAT FAR TO PLAY GOLF. OUR GOLF COURSE MUST RANK AMONG THE WORST IN THE STATE. WE, AS A COMMUNITY, AND THE PEOPLE WE HAVE CHOSEN TO RUN THIS CITY SHOULD BE ASHAMED FOR LETTING IT GET THIS BAD. I SAW AN INTERESTING STATISTIC ON T V THE OTHER DAY. "OF THE TOP 30 TOUR PROFESSIONALS PLAYING IN THE TOUR CHAPIONSHIP LAST WEEK, ON AVERAGE THEY HIT THE FAIRWAY ON THEIR TEE SHOTS ONLY 68% OF THE TIME!!!!!! I HEARD THAT BOB WEEKES AND LANCE ALLGOOD SAID THE WEEDS WERE O K BECAUSE WE SHOULD ALL STAY IN THE FAIRWAY ANYWAY!!!!!
AS FOR OUR GREENS BEING BETTER THAN FARMINGTON'S, ANYONE WHO HAS EVER PLAYED PINON HILLS KNOWS THAT'S REDICULOUS. I FIND IT HARD TO BELEIVE THAT BOB WEEKES WOULD SAY SOMETHING THAT SILLY.

HERE'S HOPING OUR CITY FATHERS WILL WAKE UP AND SMELL THE NEW MOWN GRASS.

    SORRY FOR RUNNING ON!
