NEW GOLF COURSE NAME PICKS GO TO CITY COUNCIL
Everyone in the golf committee was pleased with the response of the new name contest: we had over 30 contestants and over 60 names to pick from!
After three rounds of voting among the committee members, two names will go to City Council for the final decision:
Fox Run G.C. & Cedar Ridge G.C.
Though a couple of the logo entries were in line with the final two names, there were not enough to select from and it is likely that a new contest for the logo will begin once the new name is chosen by Mayor and City Council.
For a fair vote, none of the names of the people submitting the entries were disclosed to the voting members of the committee. Larry Binkley, Assitant City Manager, whose office received all of the names, chose to abstain from voting. Not even after the two final names were chosen were the names disclosed and only after Mayor and City Council make the final decision, will the winning name be published.
ON BEHALF OF THE COMMITTEE, WE THANK ALL PARTICIPANTS FOR THEIR ENTRIES, BUT MORE THAN ANYTHING, FOR THEIR INTEREST IN THE PROCESS AND THEIR GOLF COURSE!
Other Business:
Opening date for the golf course was discussed as well. We know the "drill" guys: as soon as we have a nice day, we are flooded with phone calls ("Are you open?", "When will you open?" "It is beautiful today, how come you are not open?")- 37 in all to the shop on Wednesday!
One person called last Monday and spoke to Bob Weekese asking on why were we closed. At the time of the call, it was snowing in Gallup! As far as I know, he had much more patience and was more polite than I would have had (so, in some ways, thanks for calling Bob and not me!). Anyway, I ask all of you to please be patient. We are not keeping the course closed just to keep you off, we are keeping it closed so that it is in decent shape when we do open.
Come on! One day of good weather is nothing to get the course in shape after such a long and wet winter! Hey, I want to play golf as much as anyone, but I'll have to exercise patience: the golf course is really soft now. Besides, weather forecast is telling us that we have not seen the last snow yet. Tentatively, IF AND ONLY IF WEATHER CHANGES FOR THE BETTER AND COURSE CONDITIONS BECOME FAVORABLE (please re-read if you have to: this is a conditional statement in which two things must go our way), we are looking to opening on March 9.
See you around!

ReplyDeleteLet's take pride in our community and our golf course. Let's also get a committment from our, soon to be elected, new Mayor and City Council to approve enough funds to maintain and grow our investment.
Yea !! to the candidate who sincerely supports the improvement of the "quality of Life" in our community. It is much more than "Bike Trails" Climbing Rocks" and "Murals". Ask the hundreds of local golfers and even more from the surrounding areas who have supported this golf course through the good times and the bad.
Special thanks to whomever came up with the idea to name the Golf Course rather that looking upon it as some kind of municipal dirt lot.
Let's incourage the youth and families of the area to use our golf course. Make them feel welcome here and hopefully let them leave with a good impression and a good experience.
There is no better way to teach integrity and character than to learn the rules and play the game of golf.
Here's to the greatest game ever invented !! GOLF.........
